This famous meteorite was first recorded in 1576, when the Spaniards came to South America. The Indians had been making metal tools out of the meteorite for thousands of years and according to their legend, it had come from heaven. This fall has been estimated to be about 4–5,000 years old, and probably an observer of the indigenous population. The Spaniards called the area Campo del Cielo, which means "fields of heaven". Many thousands of pieces of this meteorite have been found and the largest lump of iron is over 37 tons. In 2016, another new one was found, weighing as much as 30 tonnes.
